Massive attack forced Ruhr University Bochum to shut down its IT infrastructure

Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) took over the operation of a large part of its central IT infrastructure between the 6th and 7th semesters. May 2020.

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) announced today that it has had to close its doors due to a cyber attack that took place during the night of March 6-7. May, was forced to shut down part of his central IT infrastructure.

Due to significant technical problems in the IT infrastructure, the first meeting of the Board of Directors took place on Thursday 7. In May 2020, around 8 a.m., a large number of systems will be unavailable. For example, not all RUB members have access to the Outlook e-mail program and the VPN tunnel needed to access the folders from the home office. It is also not possible to select the internal service portal. Read the statement from the university. The IT services department is working on a solution. An investigation is also underway to determine whether it is a hacker attack. More information will follow.

The source of the attack was outside the central infrastructure, because the IT staff disabled most of the IT infrastructure after recommending that at least all of the faculty’s Windows-based network server systems be disabled.

RUBGU indicated that the IT services, with an external team of experts, are currently investigating the incident and assessing the damage.

IT services and a group of external experts are currently analysing the nature and extent of the damage and how it should be dealt with. Further information and recommendations for action will follow. Read the company press release.

RUBSU advises students and staff to limit the use of Windows applications and not to open e-mail attachments. It also invites you to send all board documents in PDF format.

RUB-Mail, Moodle, Rub-Cast, Zoom and Matrix (Riot) were not affected by the cyber attacks and are still available.

At this stage it is not clear whether the attackers have filtered the data of students, staff or researchers.

Cyber attacks on universities are not uncommon. In December 2019, Maastricht University (UM) announced that it would launch an attack on the university on 23 December 2019. December’s blackmail programs have infected almost all Windows systems.
